Initial signs strong for Greece's tourism season

Initial signs for Greek tourism this year are positive, according to the Greek Tourism Federation (SETE), with single or double digit growth booked across most of the sector.

Speaking to state news agency ANA-MPA , the head of SETE Andreas Andreadis said that bookings so far have been completed without discounts, indicating that tourism income this year will show growth versus a drop seen in 2016.

Last year, the sector, which accounts for about 20% of the economy, had a strong year, drawing 27.5 million visitors, 1.5 million people more than expected, but income in the sector dropped due to steep price cuts offered draw business.

SETE’s new goals for the sector, as determined in a study completed by PricewaterhouseCoopers, is for 34.8 million tourists by 2021, resulting in income of more than 20 billion euros.
