Greece introduces community gardens for Athens, large cities

Greece has introduced community gardens, also known as allotments, in a new law, allowing residents in Athens and other large cities to grow their fruit and vegetables on plots of land for their own personal use.

The presidential decree, published earlier this week, adopts the idea of community gardens that are popular in other parts of Europe, particularly among northern states.

Officials at Greece's Environment Ministry, that composed the law, say that it also introduces 15 general categories of land use, clarifying grey areas from previous legislation. Other changes includes updating land use regulations for refugee camps and recycling centers, officials added.
