Athens landmark lights up

The lights of the 44-year-old Olympic Airways sign on Vouliagmenis avenue, a well known landmark in the city, have been switched on again. In recent years, the neon light sign was not operating due to a lack of maintenance.

In a ceremony attended by some 2,000 people, the mayor of Helleniko-Argyrouploi, Giannis Konstantos flicked the switch late Thursday.

The 26-meter sign was the brain child of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, a former owner of the national Greek airline, who wanted to promote the airline to Greek and international travellers. The sign is just down the road from the old Athens international airport.
