Τhe prefecture of Nea Smirni, a suburb in southern Athens, has approved a 3.6 million euro makeover of two main roads surrounding its main square, a local council official said Tuesday.
The changes will affect Omirou and Palaiologou streets, both roads which suffer from heavy traffic congestion. The area has one of the busiest retail districts in Athens that has proved to be resilient to the country's eight year economic downturn.
Some 200 store owners are seen suffering a drop in customer traffic for the duration of the makeover due to the planned construction activity will be relieved of local council taxes for that period. No date was given as to when work in the area will commence.
