The Piraeus port of Mikrolimano, located in southwest Athens, is in for a 5.7 million euro makeover aimed at boosting visitors to the area, said a government official Tuesday.
Popular with tourists, Mikrolimano has a yacht marina that is lined with restaurants and bars, but often suffers from heavy traffic congestion due to little public transport serving the port.
The project will be paid for by the Region of Attica and will involve introducing more pedestrian friendly walkways, reducing car traffic and planting more trees in a stretch covering 15,600 square meters. A number of illegally built dwellings in the port will also be knocked over, said a government official. Work on the makeover is expected to start soon but no official date was given.
