Officials in Greece are pushing ahead with plans to develop the small port of Monilitho, in Santorini, into a marina accomodating 350 yachts.
On Wednesday, the head of the Santorini Port authority Ilias Pelekis and Enterprise Greece Chief Executive Officer Ilias Athanasiou agreed to work together and prepare the project for approval by Greece's jount ministerial investment committee.
The environmental study on the project has been completed, according to officials who estimate that it could be built within the next 12 months. Local officials are hopinng to classify the project as a fast track investment, which means that it will be able to get through red tape procedures faster given the importannce to the national annd local economies.
The new marina is seen as a way of helping draw higher income visitors to the island, one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.
