Turkey renews request to extradite soldiers in Greece

Turkey renewed its request to Greece Friday to extradite eight Turkish servicemen wanted in connections with a failed coup last year, pushing tensions between the two nations up a notch.

Turkish media reported that Turkey's Justice Ministry has made a new extradition request after Greece's Supreme Court ruled on Thursday against sending back the servicemen who fled their country by helicopter after a coup attempt.

Greece's Supreme Court on Thursday ruled against extraditing the eight soldiers, who have sought political asylum, saying they feared for their lives in Turkey, which alleges they were involved in the coup attempt and branded them traitors.

Lower courts had issued mixed decisions on the return of the officers in a series of separate hearings.
