Construction of new Piraeus port train line at half way mark
Τhe drilling of Piraeus' new underground train line, linking the port with the Athens city center, is at about the halfway mark, and on track to finish by 2020, government officials said Wednesday.
The 7.7 kilometer line under construction will connect Piraeus with Aghia Marina in the capital's west. Currently, Athens' underground railway service runs from Aghia Marina to Doukissis Plakentias (Line 3) and between Helleniko to Anthoupoli.
The new Piraeus station is expected to serve 132,000 passengers every day and seen providing some major relief to the port district that suffers from heavy traffic congestion, particularly in the busy summer months. The extension of the tram line, from Neo Faliro to Piraeus, is also being currently built and seen as boosting the Piraeus area.
