More ferries jostle for sea travelling passengers
The number of ferries travelling to Greece's islands next year will rise by 12%, according to Shipping Ministry data, reflecting increased competition for the transport routes.
Figures show that 255 ferries will be used to connect Greece with its mainland over the 2018 to 2019, up from 227 in the previous year.
The larger number of choices for sea travelers comes after passenger traffic travelling through the port of Piraeus, Greece's largest, rose 2.5 percent to 15.5 million people in 2017.
Piraeus port authorities point out that this number is largely shaped by Greeks travelling to an island and to a lesser extent by foreign tourists.
