Leroy Merlin opens new Athens branch, eyes further growth

Home improvement and gardening retailer Leroy Merlin will open the doors to a new branch in central Athens on Friday as part of a plan to operate a 20 store network in Greece and Cyprus.

The new store cost five million euros and is located at Leoforos Vasilisis Sofias 112, in a three level building that has been abandoned for some twenty years.

After entering Greece in 2005 by hooking up with the Fourlis group, the French company adopted a conservative expansion policy, but is now pushing ahead with growth plans ahead of an expected economic recovery in Greece. Leroy Merlin is present in 12 countries.

The company plans to open another two stores in Greece this year (Athens and Thessaloniki) and expand its Greek and Cyprus network to 20 in the medium term by franchising some outlets.
