Mykonos hooks up with main power grid

Mykonos was hooked up Wednesday with the country's mainland power grid, in a move officials say will help reduce power costs on the popular island.

The local power plant on Mykonos was also shut down as the island is now connnected to the mainland by an undersea cable running from Lavrio, south east of Athens, to Syros and then onto Mykonos.

Apart from power being cheaper, this will also introduce a more environmentally friendly and reliable source of electricity for the island, according to officials.

Thirteen of Greece's Cyclades islands are now connnected to the mainland. They are: Syros, Paros, Antiparos, Mykonos, Naxos, Koufonisi, Schinoussa, Irakleia, Sikinos, Folegandros, Andros and Tinos.
