Stavros Niarchos Foun. in top 20 buildings of the world
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) has been presented with this year’s prestigious, biennial award by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). It is considered to be one of the 20 most inspirational and significant new buildings created around the globe.
As stated in the RIBA’s rational for this award to the SNFCC, “this project is very important for Greece and Athens. It is patently successful, having already been embraced by the general public - drawing large numbers of people from the city to a delightful park and two world-class venues.”
The RIBA was founded in 1834. It is a global 44,000 professional member organisation. It runs renowned awards for transformative buildings that make a distinct contribution to their users and physical context.
Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop in collaboration with Greek architectural firm BETAPLAN, the SNFCC constitutes an international complex for sustainability, culture, education and entertainment, housing in its premises the National Library of Greece (NLG), the Greek National Opera and the Stavros Niarchos Park. As a result of the award, SNFCC enters the long list for the RIBA International Prize (to be awarded in November 2018).
