Strong jump in Corfu tourism keeps stores open until midnight
Higher tourism numbers on the island of Corfu, western Greece, have forced authorities to extend the trading hours of retail stores, according to an announcement published Thursday.
After an initial request from local traders, the Region of the Ionian Islands said that closing times in shopping districts catering to tourists will be pushed back to midnight from 21:00.
The late closing hours will apply until the end of October, from Monday through to Saturday.
Data from the Greek Tourism Federation (SETE) shows that the number of foreign tourists that reached the island by plane in the first half of the year reached 518,060, versus 418,423 in the same period last year, up 23 percent.
