University students face soaring rental costs

University students looking for a place this year are faced with soaring rental costs and a shrinking number of homes to choose from, according to

Figures collected by the site show that the price of renting an apartment in Athens jumped 17 percent from last year, and 14 percent in Thessaloniki. In the rest of Greece, the hike was an average of 6 percent.

Renting a place in central Athens costs 7.1 euros per square metre, up from 5.9 euros last year, an increase of 20 percent, said the site.

In other areas popular with students such as Kallithea and Pangrati, the price hikes were in the range of 16 to 22 percent. In Aegaleo, prices were unchanged from last year at 6.1 euros per square meter.
