Mikrolimano makeover to boost Piraeus, Athens Riviera
The area of Mikrolimano in Piraeus, southern Athens, is in for a major 5.7 million euro makeover in a bid to to boost its flagging popularity.
Last week, the municipality of Piraeus signed off on the study to change the area that starts at Neo Faliro and stretches over six kilometers. Improvements are seen giving a boost to Piraeus, the southern Athens coastal areas and the so called, Athens Riviera, as the massive Hellinikon urban project looks to be slowly moving ahead.
A key part of the improvement to Mikrolimano is the removal of numerous illegals dwelling clogging up the marina area that have been occupied by restaurants, cafes and nighspots and cut off the access to the waterfront to the public.
The changes aim at introducing wide pavements, bike paths and green areas to a district that currently suffers from heavy traffic congestion. The on the the makeover is expected to start in the 9-12 months.
