Greece gets tough on Airbnb-type platforms

Name-and-shame tactics, 100K fines may be used by Greece in Airbnb crackdown

Airbnb-type platforms that refuse to share information about their clients with the Greek tax office on properties listed in the country could face fines of up to 100,000 euros, as part of a crackdown by the government on the sector.

A bill tabled in parliament said that platforms relating to short term property rentals in Greece must share their data with the Greek government, if requested, otherwise be hit with a fine of between 30,000 euros to 100,000 euros.

In the event that the platform snubs a request for information it will also be cut off from Greek internet service providers and see its name published on the tax office's website, alongside the fine to be paid.

The country is targetting revenues of some 400 million euros in 2020 from homes used to provide brief accomodation to Greece's 30 million tourists.

Conservatives New Democracy, that took office in July, are expected to soon unveil a tighter regulatory framework on the industry where tax evasion is believed to be rampant.

Demand for properties for short term rentals has absorbed a large number of homes in the real estate market, forcing rent prices sharply higher and creating a housing shortage in parts of central Athens and on some of the country's more popular islands, such as Mykonos, Santorini and Crete.
